A very interesting paper from Dr. Carmen L. Battaglia compiles a tremendous amount of information regarding early neurological stimulation in dogs and how it relates to their abilities to endure stress and learn as they mature. We want to share one paragraph which discusses training and exercise...
"Regular trips to the park, shopping centers and obedience and agility classes serve as good examples of enrichment activities. Chasing and retrieving a ball on the surface seems to be enriching because it provides exercise and includes rewards. While repeated attempts to retrieve a ball provide much physical activity, it should not be confused with enrichment exercises. Such playful activities should be used for exercise and play or as a reward after returning from a trip or training session. Road work and chasing balls are not substitutes for trips to the shopping mall, outings or obedience classes most of which provide many opportunities for interaction and investigation."
About Our Unique Program
Ursula has been working with colleague Robyn Walters to develop a new program for the Idaho Humane Society. Through this effort was born an innovative way to provide training to dogs, puppies, and their owners. It is module and skills based weaving a framework that allows you to work at your own pace and schedule as well as choose what to learn, when and how long to attend.
How it works -
The program consists of a series of modules, skills, and levels. Modules are offered at least three times over a two week period with four different modules offered each week. When enrolled in a session you are able to attend as many modules as you desire as often as you desire for the period of your enrollment.
Program Goals are consistent with Ursula's core philosophies regarding dog training...
-
Socialize your dog through positive interactions and games
-
Learn basic ways to communicate effectively with your dog
-
Help your dog become a 'thinking' dog
- Have fun building the foundation for a wonderful lasting relationship with your dog
Please feel free to call or email if you have questions or need more information. We anticipate the sessions filling quickly so look forward to hearing from you soon!
